Project Green Plate
Project green plate was born out of our desire to combat the development of obesity in low income neighborhoods. We want to increase access to organic produce and implement nutrition education in these areas in Pomona...
Our First Project
Project Green Plate
How It Got Started
Our research into Project Green Plate has shown us that over 50% of the residents in Pomona are living in a food desert. There was a barrier between healthy food options and nutrition education amongst these residents. So, we partnered up with local urban farmers to help provide fresh, organic produce for these people.
What We're Doing Now
We're still delivering food to these residents. What's in the works is our organization is partnering up with the local schools to provide a nutritional education curriculum with the help of our Director of Education. We primarily want to teach the youngsters in elementary and slowly move up our way to the higher grade levels. We're also recruiting new volunteers to help us harvest and deliver food to these families as well as expand our list of families to donate to.
What We Have Accomplished
Since this project started, we've delivered over 270 food baskets to around 30 families. Each week we would harvest fresh produce provided by the local urban farmers and other booths around the Pomona Certified Farmers' Market and hand deliver to these residents. We recently received our 501c3 Nonprofit Organization status, and we're just about to finish the legal work to get started with our curriculum to the K-12 schools.
